On the 16th of february Paris Saint Germain will host the first leg of the 1/8-final against Chelsea in the champions league on Parc de Princes. This fixture has really become somewhat of a classic and in both of their previous late stage champions league meetings the outcome have gone to away goal differentials. Though this years meeting will be somewhat different as we will see a PSG in their prime led by Zlatain Ibrahimovic who will be looking to lead his team towards the finals and on the other side of the field we have a Chelsea that is back from a declining season with a clear lack of leadership following the departure of Mourinho.
This fixture will be the first stepping stone on PSG’s goal to reach at least the semi finals of the champions league and it will be one of Ibra’s last opportunities on reaching and winning the champions league finals; Zlatan knows it, the team knows it and Paris knows it.
Chelsea will be coming into this game with 3 victories and 2 draws overall aswell as 3 victories, 1 defeat and 1 draw on the road. Things are really starting to clear up for Chelsea with the departure of José Mourinho and Guus Hiddink is doing a good job in recovering from their declining fall. However building trust and leadership with a new manager takes time and for these type of games it’s very important as Chelsea will need to be at the level they were last year to have a chance to match PSG. The blues currently have a healthy squad though as both Willian and Remy are said to come back from their injuries in the coming days.
Paris Saint Germain will be coming into this game with 5 victories overall aswell as 5 victories on the road. With their 2-0 away game victory over Saint-Etienne, Paris Saint Germain will be looking to make Ligue 1 history as they aim for the longest unbeaten record (currently tied with Nantes at 33 games) and this should prove to be yet another morale boost coming into the Chelsea fixture. Blanc’s men have everything in their favor this year; Profitable transfers in Di Maria and Kevin Trapp (Who have taken the starting keeper position from Salvatore Sirigu), they’re breaking records and having an amazing season, even being able to play on even ground with Real Madrid in the group stage final. PSG however is facing quite a lot of key injuries as the iconic players Lavezzi, Silva, Pastore and Luiz are all out (However both Thiago Silva and David Luiz are rumored to play in this game). PSG is also missing Van Der Wiel, Kurzawa and Sirigu.

In their latest head to head meetings PSG have won one, Chelsea have won one and there have been 3 draws with Chelsea winning one of those draws on penalties. Out of the two teams PSG really looked more motivated in last years champions league 1/8 finals where they advanced on away goals as they pulled of a draw at Stamford Bridge with 10 man, missing their main man Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
At first glance this game could seem hard to predict as Chelsea clearly is the weaker team at the moment and PSG have all their injuries, but with 15 days to game time and most of the key players rumored to be back sooner than that aswell as PSG’s strong home record. And the fact that this will be one of the more important games in the game changer Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s career as his role was to lead PSG deeper into the champions league (this year being their best shot as of his arrival), the story is clear: The value is with PSG in this one.
The viking’s prediction is that PSG will win and possibly without allowing Chelsea to even score, this depends on the return of Silva though as otherwise the over 2.5 goals seems like the better pick. We can’t see PSG loosing this one (Chelsea will at the very most manage a draw) as all the facts points towards it:
- PSG have been extremly dominate at home this season, playing on par with Real Madrid and even (probably) breaking the Ligue 1 undefeated record.
- PSG is the more motivated team, they have better team moral and a more defined leadership on the field.
- Chelsea needs time to grow into Hiddink’s management and possibly reassess some of their players (I.E Pedro who’ve been underperforming baring in mind what the blues paid for him).
- PSG will have the home field advantage, in these type of games and with what’s on stake for the team and Zlatan this will play a huge role in the game.
- This is the Zlatan Ibrahimovic show!
