Major upsets in the LoL world championship:

The first week of the League of Legends World Championship is finished and the viking has watched the entire event to give you guys some top of the line predictions. We saw quite a few upsets during the games and no team managed to get a 3-0 record. In group C the wild card team INTZ E-Sports managed to beat China’s first seed Edward Gaming after a control game in which they managed to extend early advantages on the top lane and jungle into macro advantages, securing most of the objectives on the map. The INTZ top lane star has since then faced a perma ban on his signature champion Gnar and the team wasn’t able to ride on the hype as they fell to both AHQ and H2K. The other major upset so far in the tournament was ANX (Albus Nox Luna) another wildcard team that managed to create a 3-way 2-1 tie in group A as they defeated both CLG and Gamers 2.

Europe fails and North America has a golden opportunity:

The European teams are currently at a disappointing 1-8 as the only team to actually win a game was H2K who defeated INTZ E-Sports. This is quite a let down to the european fans as the region is traditionally known to be one of the stronger one as it’s the home of super star players such as Froggen, Alex Ich, Rekkles, Forgiven, Yellowstar and many more. To break this down we first need to look at Splyce; They’re an inexperienced team and in one of the hardest groups facing home-crowd favourites and super team TSM aswell as the korean Samsung Galaxy and what has looked to be one of the tournaments strongest teams in RNG. Those are 3 teams that are all contenders to lift the summoners cup, both TSM and RNG have players such as Uzi and Bjergsen that are very familiar with the LoL world championship and most of the players on those teams are comfortable in playing on the world stage. Splyce on the other hand haven’t had a single international appearance prior to this one.

Now on the side of Ocelote’s G2 that’s another story, they actually looked quite strong in their game versus CLG and then yet again versus ROX Tigers. Though the team has lacked decisiveness and in their game against ANX they just seemed to be on tilt due to the fact that they were facing a 0-3 start. Gamers 2 which is considered to be one of the stronger teams from europe was the favourite for the runner-up spot with CLG prior to the games, though now they need a 3-0 record in order to advance with a possible tie-breaker match against CLG granted that CLG goes 1-2. Something which isn’t impossible for the G2 line-up but quite improbable considering that they need to beat both ROX and CLG.

Finally for H2K they actually looked decent in this first round and showed renewed focus in their match against INTZ. However in order to advance they need to finish at least 2-1 and hope that AHQ looses to EDG, again with Forgiven who is considered to be among the best ADC’s in the world this isn’t impossible but quite an up-hill battle.

Now the American teams on the other hand have all had very strong showings and are all at 2-1 from the first round. TSM had issues with their shotcalling as Bjergsen was sick throughout the whole first round which meant that Doublelift had to be the voice of the team and as such he wasn’t able to perform at his max individual level. The crowd favourite still managed to beat Samsung galaxy with an impressive 18-1 to secure the 3-way tie in the group.

Korea shows vulnerability and China shines:

Now if we disregard the fact that EDG junior (aka IMAY) is currently at 1-2 after dropping games to both C9 and SKT then China is looking really strong and both RNG and EDG looks to be heading into the quarters. IMAY’s run at the league of legends worlds championship feels over however as all of the teams in their group will put up quite a fight in the second round and for them to manage even a 2-1 record seems highly unlikely as the team lacks international experience. EDG and RNG on the other hand both smashed their opponents in the first round , RNG in particular showed that if they can get UZI rolling on a high skill-cap champion such as Ezreal then the game is over.

The korean teams that are known for steamrolling their opponents each dropped a game and are all at 2-1. ROX Tigers who were the beforehand favourites struggled in every single early-game but showed their famous mid-game dominance in all but 1 game versus CLG where Huhi just took over the game with his Aurelion Sol backed up by Aphromoo’s famous Alistar. This shows that even the strongest team from Korea can beat and aggressive early teams such as the chinese teams could very well capitalize on this. The two time world champions SKT on the other hand was looking as the strongest team of the tournament yet again but were defeated by the Flash Wolves in their final game (Deja vou from MSI). It was clear that the absence of Benghi hurt Faker in that game and the Wolves just targeted the mid lane with ganks over and over to gain the victory, yet another weakness that was revealed (though SKT probably will just sub in Benghi again).

LoL Worlds groups predictions:

The viking watched every single one of the games in the first round of the first round of the tournament, if you missed some of the games or didn’t watch them at all then you can find the vods here:

Our prediction for the group stage winners will be based on what we saw from teams in those games aswell as overall skill level and experience of the teams.

lol-world-championship-faker

Group A:

The viking’s prediction for group A is that ROX Tigers will finish first in the group and Counter logic gaming will grab the runner-up spot. There is a potential upset here for ANX if they manage to defeat CLG, however that means that they will also need to win over G2 again something that is quite unlikely.

Group B:

The viking’s prediction for this group is that SKT will finish in the first spot, possibly going 3-0 in the second round. The runner-up pick here is C9 due to the experience among the players and in the organization. It might seem to early to rule out both Imay and Flash wolves but C9 is known for keeping their cool and playing a strategic game.

Group C:

The viking’s prediction for group C is that EDG goes 3-0 in the second round and the runner-up spot will be a decider between AHQ and H2K. Forgiven goes on to carry H2K to a 3-0 run into the decider.

Group D:

The viking’s prediction for group D is that TSM and RNG will play a decider for the first and second place in the group. Samsung Galaxy looked far to weak in the 18-1 stomp against TSM and they’ll surely drop a game to either if not both teams. Splyce has a very slim to no chance at advancing here. Both Bjergsen and Uzi showed that they can carry their teams if they need to. TSM looked really strong in the first round even though Bjergsen was sick and Doublelift had to mantle the role of primary and secondary shotcaller, with Bjergsen back healthy we’re sure to see Doublelift shining here aswell.
